Travels with the Boss

Just as space is what keeps everything from being in the same place, then travel is what keeps us from being all the same people. While our daily familiar fades into unseen wallpaper, the outré awakens us to possibility. Nancy and I travel in search of experience and memories.

But we are too old to be daredevils (truth be told, I never was one). We are day-adventurers who openly confess our love of fine dinners, good wine, and clean warm beds. We'll hike and sweat and scramble, get dirty and tired and humbled, do things ridiculous or foolish (if nobody's watching), all for the pleasure of a hot shower, a bracing walk to a great restaurant, then a walk home and sleep.

In travel, boredom brackets adventure: to achieve that perfect moment, you pack, wait, cab, wait, fly, wait, bus, wait, walk, wait, rental car, wait, drive, wait, and hike. In travel writing, across that magic sentence-ending dot the reader vicariously leaps space and time, from highlight to highlight.

Memories live in the mind cheek-by-jowl next to imagination. Writing my trip notes fires my memories; with luck, reading them stimulates your imagination. A list of desintations is below--the navigation bar at left will speed you along.
