We've never been here before: a principle for travel
Vacation is relaxation, but travel is stress. To resolve this paradox of travel, Nancy and I have found our mantra: We've Never Been Here Before.
- It's okay to mess up. There is no disgrace in making a U-turn.
- If you have to do something difficult, give yourself an advantage (like arriving in daylight).
- If something is a disappointment, give yourself permission to acknowledge you're not enjoying it.
- Something will always be unexpectedly closed. If this happens, or if an activity you planned is a disappointment, cheerfully do something else.
- If you see an unexpected opportunity, change your plans to accommodate it.
- Sometimes you can solve a problem by paying a little too much. Do so. You have no reason to be confident you can do better in any manageable time interval.
The way of WNBHB is hard -- as these notes will show, on this trip I failed many times -- but with practice you can achieve travel satori.
