License plate spotting: travel's trainspotting
On vacation we -- mostly I -- try to spot all of a country's license plates. Like other forms of obsessive endeavor, this can be absorbing both for its own achievement and for the discipline its pursuit provides. Some come easily, others are hard. They have a taxonomy and pattern but each one is unique. Which are rare depends on where you are in the country. When you've seen them all, are you any wiser? But the act of looking makes you sharpen your observing.
