MEET THE PARENTS
|
In MEET THE PARENTS, the same lovable goof Ben Stiller played in THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY wants to become engaged but before he does, he must endure the weekend from Hell at the Oyster Bay home of his prospective in-laws.
Robert De Niro has died and gone to heaven: his tics are so well known he now caricature his ANALYZE THIS caricature and still be the only one worth watching. The story is puerile, predictable, and slow. The predicaments's glacial setup only emphasizes how hard it would be for someone to be that dumb. The supporting characters are drawn and blissful idiots. Even if you thought Ben Stiller was funny in SOMETHING ABOUT MARY, you will be lucky to find three or four chuckles in this lame excuse for a movie whose messages are that love is good, lying is bad, and confession is good for the soul.
Nancy and I sat through an hour and 45 minutes of slow awkward torture that finally set up one three-minute good scene. At our 5:25 pm showing, there were eight people in the theater. That was eight people too many.
